Install Windows XP mode in Virtual Box running on windows 7

Recently I have been trying to set up a virtual environment for windows XP on my windows 7 ultimate system. I first went on to try out the normal procedure to install windows XP in virtual box but it failed every time . I went out to find out the problem . The problem was that Microsoft has prevented the installation of XP on virtual machines if the virtual machins is a windows 7 . It installs easily on the basic version of Windows7 but for the professional and Ultimate version , you will have to download the Windows XP mode from microsoft website .




Before letting you download , Microsoft will check weather your copy of windows is genuine or cracked. In case you have a genuine copy of windows 7 then you can download it directly from Here- Windows XP mode.




In case you have a pirated windows then please dont go to the above mentioned link as your windows will get blocked. For them I have brought another solution. Pirated window users can direclty download Windows XP mode directly without check from here - Direct download for XP mode.(469 MB).




So the first problem is solved. Now this XP mode is made to run on Windows Virtual PC software(Thats why i hate microsoft ) .. So how to make it work on VirtualBox or Vmware virtual machine.




Here is the solution to both Pirated and genuine window users . Follow these steps




Step 1 - Once the download of XP mode is complete you can run the setup . After the installation go to the directory where installed. By default it is C/program files/windows xp mode .




Step 2 - Copy the "xp mode base.vhd" to any location of your choice. Now right click on it and uncheck the "Read only option" .

Step 3 - Now start your virtual box and create a new virtual machine for windows XP by selecting the onscreen options.



Step 4 - When you have to select the hard disk option then select the "use existing hard drive" and choose the copied "widows xp base.vhd file and add this new virtual hard drive to install the setup.



Step 5 - Once you are done with the above steps then you can proceed with the installation part of the windows xp virtual machine.



Once the installation is done you will see the welcome screen of windows XP .




You will notice that this will be a 30 day trial version of windows XP . You can go to the installation folder of windows xp mode and view the key.txt file to find your activation key.

Thats it . Your XP is up and running .

Bonne nouvelle pour tous les amateurs de Windows  ou les développeurs, Microsoft a mis en ligne une version démo de son prochain système d'exploitation, réservé aux développeurs ! Vous allez pouvoir télécharger Windows 8 !

Autre bonne nouvelle, il n'y a pas besoin d'activation pour jouer avec !

Alors par contre, je ne vous recommande pas d'en faire votre système de prod. D'ailleurs, cette ISO ne permet pas de faire une mise à jour à partir de Windows 7. Il faut faire une install propre, donc mettez le sur une machine de test, ou sur une nouvelle partition ou sur une virtualbox, ce sera plus sage .

Bon, comme vous, je suis en train de la télécharger donc pas eu le temps encore de jouer avec, mais ce que je peux vous dire c'est qu'on trouve dans cette release :


          -Le SDK et les outils pour développer des applications Windows 8. Les apps style Metro pourront être conçues avec du HTML5 et Javascript mais aussi du C/C++ ou du C#/XAML. 
          -Pas mal de fonctionnalités ont été désactivées donc je compte bien trouvé des patchs ou des bidouilles pour débrider tout ça.

           -Que les applications Windows 7 seront compatibles

        -Que les applications qui ne tournent pas sur l'écran principal seront suspendues automatiquement

          -Que ça boote vite

          -Que le multi touch débarque dans IE10

         -Qu'un vieil Atom de première génération avec 1 GB de RAM peut faire fonctionner Windows 8

    -Que les applications seront toutes connectées nativement pour échanger des informations (ça ça va être terrible...)

           -Qu'il y a un antivirus intégré à l'OS

Et plein d'autres surprises que vous découvrirez en jouant avec cette release !

5 Things to do when you are hit by a Facebook spam

These days there are two things that are spreading fast on facebook:

First is the spam containing inappropriate content.

Second is the photo people are sharing after they are hit by the spam( and putting all blame on hackers).

Recently one of my friends pointed out a strange thing happening with his account. He tried to delete the spam but in turn it started spreading through his profile even though he didn't click the spam link. Well its tough to tell why this is happening but his problem shifted my attention back to the spam codes where found a buried script which was doing quiet a fun with the cookies.

Later today my friends problem brought my attention to that script. Anyways I dont want this tutorial to turn too geeky so I will speak simple language.

Lets talk about 5 things that you can do to completely get rid of the spam in case you accidently( or knowingly) clicked it. The steps mentioned here are in order. So if you are a victim then follow all the five steps starting from step 1.


1. Report as spam


This is the first precautionary step. Immideatley report the spam to facebook( dont click on delete). Reporting as spam automatically hides the link from your feed so dont take the risk of deleting it.

2. Disable the installed plugin

The recent spam asks you to install a missing plugin. So in case you have installed it, act fast to remove it. If you are using firefox then go to Firefox > Add-ons > Extensions . Here you will find the malicious plugin. Click on Remove to get rid of it.

For Crome users, click on the small Wrench(Rinch) icon at the right corner of the browser, then click on options and move to Extensions. Disable and remove the plugin from there.

3. Switch to Https

Immideately switch to https version of facebook if you still haven't. This will prevent any kind of session hijacking and will prevent the http cookies created by the spam in your system to re-post the link on the profile.

4. Clear Cookies, Browsing history and Browser cache


The spam creates lots of fake facebook http cookies on your system which can re-post the spam links on your profile and can redirect you to other links as well. So it is highly recommended that you delete all the browser cookies. Clearing history can also help in cases where you may again accidently click the link.

You can go to Browser options to clear the cookies, history etc.

5. Change the password


Last but not the least. Change the facebook password. Your facebook account is precious to you so why to take the risk.

How to open/close ports in Windows 7 Firewall

Hello friends. Moving on to the second post of Windows firewall series. Here I will discuss how to open or close a port/service on windows firewall. This is an important thing to know as it can be helpful for you to take charge of your firewall and build your own trusted list of communicating softwares.




Every software wants to be firewall-free hence it sets itself as a trusted software during installation. This is the reason why we can easily run Crome browser and the Firewall wont prompt even once. But if you try to run an FTP server then the firewall will intrrupt the connection. If you have missed the first part of this series then you can visit here.

Before I begin there are two important definitions that I will like to share.




Inbound rules explicitly allow, or explicitly block, traffic that matches the criteria in the rule. For example, you can configure a rule to explicitly allow traffic secured by IPsec for Remote Desktop through the firewall, but block the same traffic if it is not secured by IPsec.

Outbound rules are rules that explicitly allow, or explicitly deny, traffic originating from the computer that matches the criteria in the rule. For example, you can configure a rule to explicitly block outbound traffic to a computer through the firewall, but allow the same traffic for other computers.




Let us see how we can open ports on windows firewall.







Step 1 - Go to control pannel, Click on windoews firewall. Click on Advanced settings.

Step 2 - On the left side you will see two options , Inbound rules and outbound rules.

Step 3 - In order to open a port, Right click on Inbound rules and create new rule.

Step 4 - Select "Port" and click next.

Step 5 - Now Choose the port type as either TCp or UDP and choose a port number. In this example I have chosen UDP and port number 12345.

Step 6 - Now choose connectivity type. It is recommended that you select all three options so that the port appears open even when you are not connected to any public network.

Step 7 - Now give a name to your rule. Click next to finish the process. You will notice that your newely created rule is now added in the rule list.

Step 8 - So your port is now open to receive connections. Right click on the rule and clicking on Delete will delete the rule and thus close the port.




But what to do after the port is open. Let us try to run a service over it. (all multiplayer game lovers pay attention).




Step 9 - Suppose you want to run a service on the port you just opened then the process is simple. Right click on the newely created rule, click on properties, then go to "Programs and services" tab.




Step 10 - You will have an option to add a service to the perticular open port. Suppose I want to run Netcat service over the port. So i choose the netcat executable here.

Bingo!! My Netcat service is up and running on my custom port. This can be an effective technique for setting up VPN's and Multiplayer game servers.




There is another important thing that security professionals will find helpful is viewing the firewall log file. It is an asset to determine network activities.

To view and configure firewall log file, open firewall, click on advanced settings, choose "monitoring".




In the middle pane you will find an option of "logging" .

You can find your firewall log file and also other configurations there.

Dummies Guide to Windows Firewall - Unveil your Network Privacy

Hello Friends. Recently one of my college friend asked me about Windows firewall.

The problem he asked quiet common among various network enthusiasts

and professionals. Understanding windows Firewall is as important as understanding

the function of Recycle Bin(hope you all are aware of Recycle bin).


So I thought to start a small series on windows firewall. I will deal with windows 7

and 8 firewall settings and focus mainly on its configuration and handling. This post

will be handy for Network administrators as well.

Let us start with some basics.

Firewall is a hardware or software that monitors data traffic of a network or a single

machine and prevents it from unauthorized access. There are several types of firewalls based on their working.

Types of Firewall

Network-Level Firewalls

Firewall come into being in 1988 effort at the network level. The objective of firewall is to examine sachet headers and clean traffic based on the IP address of the starting place and the target. Some of these primitive safety applications could also sort out packets based on protocols. Network-Level Firewalls are very fast and upcoming technologies you will find them built in network appliances specially routers. Firewall has no aware of any language such as HTML, XML therefore Firewall capable of decoding SSL encrypted packets to inspect their data or text.

Circuit-Level Firewalls

Circuit-Level Firewalls applications represent the technology of next to first generation .Firewall technology supervise TCP handshaking among packets to confirm a session is genuine. Firewall traffic is clean based on particular session rules and may be controlled to acknowledged computers only. Circuit-level firewalls conceal the network itself from the external, which is helpful for contradicting access to impostors. But Circuit-Level Firewalls don't clean entity packets

Application-Level Firewalls

Application-Level Firewalls which is also called proxies have been appearing more intensely into the application data going away their filters. By considering the perspective of user requirements and appliance responses, Application-Level Firewalls Attempt to implement exact application conduct, block malevolent action and help business companies make sure the security of responsive information and systems. Application-level filtering also used to protect your system against spam and viruses. It is also capable to block may include protection against spam and viruses as well, and be able to block unwanted Web sites.

Let us quickly move to windows firewall. Windows has been working really hard on its firewall settings since it failed to deliver a stable firewall for XP. The current version is in windows 7 is safe but it is buggy as well( explained later).

Windows Firewall is on by default in this version of Windows. To make sure it hasn't been turned off, follow these steps:

Open Windows Firewall by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type firewall, and then click Windows Firewall.

In the left pane, click Turn Windows Firewall on or off. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation

Below each network location type, click Turn on Windows Firewall, and then click OK. We recommend that you turn on the firewall for all network location types.

Time to start playing. Go to control panel and open firewall. You will see a beautiful interface similar to the one shown in figure.

So now there are two big questions (in my mind) that needs to be addressed. Let us start with the first one.

How can I manage my firewall connections?

Simple. Click on "allow program or feature through Firewall". YOu will be presented with a list of programs that can communicate through the firewall. Well the next question comes in now.

What does "allowing a program to communicate through the firewall" mean?

Allowing a program to communicate through the firewall, sometimes called unblocking, is when you allow a particular program to send information through the firewall. You can also allow a program to communicate through the firewall by opening one or more ports.

So now you have a basic understanding of what communicating through firewall means. Now to change the communication settings go to Allow program or feature through Firewall > Change Settings

Now here you can see which softwares are stabbing your back by making unknown connections. You can control your traffic as well as privacy through this setting. You never know when you can find a suspicious software is fooling the Giant Microsoft and running unblocked. I found one on my system. Check out the image.

This is a small introductory post. Since I have never written about firewalls so I went deeper into basics. In the next post we will move a step ahead and learn how to view log files and analyse the traffic. Further we will learn how to open/close ports on windows firewall.
